Trade HUB Impact 2018 - 2024

The GCRF Trade, Development and the Environment Hub project (TRADE Hub) was a wide-reaching research-to-impact hub that advanced sustainability in the global to local trading system of agricultural commodities and wildlife.  We wanted to see a step change to advance environmental sustainability and social equity in the trade system, to ensure it respects planetary boundaries and enhances wellbeing for all.  Through our research, we have developed tools for 6 major agricultural commodities as well as wild meat and wildlife trade globally, with a focus on 5 countries in the global south (Map 1).  We have supported Private (corporate) and Public (government) decision making-through dedicated work areas, and partnered with a wide range of stakeholders, from young researchers to smallholder farmers, to understand their needs and develop capacity.

Since February 2019, over 200 staff have been employed by the project. Together, they have completed hundreds of years of research, outreach and engagement work over five years, resulting in over400 scientific and technical outputs, XXX outreach and communication products and XXX training resources. Key findings from these outputs have been brought together to create synthesis products on topics relating to trade in wildlife, wild meat and agricultural commodities - targeting sector-specific decision-makers who can undertake actions to enhance trade sustainability.

Looking ahead, we have developed essays on pathways for sustainable agricultural commodity trades at the global scale, and nationally for Indonesia, Tanzania, Cameroon, China and Brazil. These chart a path forward for more sustainable and equitable trade.  Similarly, our roadmaps for wildmeat and wildlife trade also outline the changes and potential solutions to unsustainable trade in wild animals and their meat.
